The US flag is beautiful and represents the United States of America. There are 13 stripes containing alternating stripes of red and white. The 13 stripes represent the 13 states that made up our original colonies. These 13 colonies are the ones that fought the rebellious war against Great Britain. There are also 50 stars which represent the 50 states that make up our union. Although the crafts below will not ever be as glorious and beautiful as the actual US flag, it is wonderful to celebrate our country by creating red, white, and blue flag-like crafts....so we can show our overwhelming American patriotism.
For a very easy crafts project, you can take 9 popsicle sticks....color 5 of them red and 4 of them white. Then glue a few popsicle sticks to the back vertically to hold them all together. After the paint dries....paint a blue square in the upper left corner of the flag. You can then take star stickers and put them on the blue square...or paint white stars on the blue square...or paste white stars on there. If you really can't make stars....draw a lowercase letter 't'....and then over that 't' draw a letter 't'. You will then have star-like shapes that look like this *.
Another idea, great for preschoolers and older kids too, is to make a construction paper flag that you can hold. Take a red piece of craft paper....cut out 6 strips of white pieces of paper for the stripes. Cut out a blue square and paste it to the upper left corner of the flag. If you have white buttons, glue them to the blue square. Then glue this to a cardboard paper towel roll. If you don't have this...glue it to a chopstick or pencil.
Another cool idea is to make a US flag mosaic craft. Get red, white, and blue buttons, pieces of paper, beads, or caps, or whatever. Then glue them all together on a piece of cardboard or paper in the form of an American flag with stripes, and blue rectangle. You won't be ablet o make stars, but you can make circles for the stars. It will look incredibly neat...and will be a great keepsake craft.
Another idea is to take perler beads and fuse them together as red and white stripes with a blue square in the corner. You can them glue a pin clasp on the back to make a perler bead patriotic pin.
