One of the earliest crafts I remember doing as a kid was making lanyards at summer camp. They were a little tough for me when I was little because you need a certain level of finger dexterity to do a good job, but I always loved working on them anyway. There were so many different stitches to learn and you could interweave lots of different colors. You also always felt like you had a great gift to give away to someone when you were done making your lanyard. Even if it didn't turn out perfect, everyone knew and could appreciate the amount of time and energy you took to put that gift lanyard together.
There were also some really practical lanyard crafts you could make once you were a little older and got better at the different stitches. You could make lanyard key chains or lanyard whistle holders to go around your neck or wrist. Lanyards aren't just for the Summer though, they can be a perfect craft to do on a rainy day or just to keep your fingers busy while watching tv.
