Have a lot of fun making this inexpensive craft. I think you will find all of the items around your house for this one. Cover your table with newspaper or garbage bags or something else that will guarantee that you won't mess up your parents' table. Then get a few containers of paint...in different colors. Then dip string in the paint...moving to different colors as you move down the length of the string. The length of the string largely depends on the size of your jar...so I can't give you an exact length. Just go much bigger than your assume the string will have to be. Take the label off of your jar...and the lid. Then cover your jar with clear glue. Slowly wrap the string around the jar, pressing it down as you go up the jar. When you reach the top of the jar, glue the end of the string inside the jar...pressing it down until it dries. A nice touch is to glue down string words or designs or names on top of the string jar you just made.
This is a great way to use an empty jar. First, crush some egg shells...this will be the snow. A lot of people use glitter inside the snow globe but the snow comes out better this way. However, if you don't have egg shells, than you are more than welcome to use glitter. Next, glue some stuff onto the bottom of the lid that would resemble the woods...such as leaves, stones, pebbles, grass, moss, twigs, etc Next, take the egg shells and throw them in the jar...then add mineral oil up to the top of the jar. Now glue the lid on and then seal it with parental supervision ... as you will need to use hot glue or caulk and this is dangerous for children to do unsupervised.
If you have an empty jar just hanging around then how about turning it into an awesome snowman...and this one doesn't have to be kept cold. Just tape paper all over the jar until it is in the basic shape of a snowman with 2 snowballs. After that is done then cover the outside of the paper with cotton balls by gluing them on top of the paper. Next use pipecleaners for the wood arms by twisting them into 'Y's. Then glue them on to the snowmen. Make the hat from a cardboard tube and 2 paper circles, one bigger than the other. Paint or color them black. Use a ribbon for a scarf, and cut the other peices, such as the nose, and buttons with paper glue ons as well. You can twist the head off to store things inside of the snowman. It doesn't get much cooler than that.
If you have an empty jar, and you are bored anyways, how about making a time capsule to fill up your day. Make a letter stating who you are...such as your age, name, school that you go to, your teacher, your likes, your disklikes, what you hope to be when you grow up, how many children you want to have, etc. The other paper should be about what the world is like today....current events such as current tragedies, current president, etc. This way you can see how much the world has changed when you open up the jar 5 years from now. Add other trinkets and items that represent who you are and the time that you live in. THen cover the jar with plastic wrap and then tigthen the lid. Then bury the jar in your backyard and don't open it for 5 years or if you move, dig it up.
First of all, ask your parents if you are allowed to use a hammer and nail to punch holes in the lids of 2 spice jars. If you are allowed to, then clean out and empty 2 spice jars into other containers (again ... ask parents first). Then punch a few holes in each of the jar's caps....using a larger nail for the salt shaker and a smaller nail for the pepper shaker. Then you will want to glue a piece of heavy cord or string at the bottom of the bottle and slowly glue and wind the cord around the entire jar until you are at the top of the bottle. Then find a different color string that stands out and is easily seen against the first string that you used...this will be the string that you form the letter 'S' and 'P' with. Glue these on to the jars. Then make a mixture of glue and water (3 parts glue to 1 part water) .... use a paint brush to cover each shaker completely. Let dry completely before adding the next coat. Give it a few coats and then let dry.
