Grasshoppers and Crickets are related but are from different families. The cricket is from the Gryllidae family, while the grasshopper is from the Caelifera family. Both insects can be found worldwide near the grasslands. The crickets has a more flatter body than the grasshoppers and also have longer antennaes. Both insects are harmless to us and children find them very interesting.
Children can make both grasshoppers and crickets from pipe cleaners/chenille stems. They can also make them from paper using the origami method. They can also make both insects from pipe cleaners/chenille stems and clothespins.
Here is a cute grasshopper craft that any child can try. You start off with a wooden clothespin and you either paint it green or use a marker to color it green...as seen in figure #1 above. Then take a green pipe cleaner and push it through the hole in the center of the clothespin ...until half is on one side and the other half is on the other. Than bend each leg so it is shaped like a mountain, as seen in figure #2 above. Then either use wire or half of a pipe cleaner for the antennae. Clip it in right in front of the legs, so that half is on one side and half is on the other. Curve each antenna outwards. Attach googly eyes right in front of the antennae. Add your own creative spark to the grasshopper if you want to.
These cute little grasshoppers can be made by most children...and great for preschoolers or Kindergarteners...but also great for older kids as well. Put dip your entire pointer finger in green paint or on a stamp and then push it down on paper. You made a print of your entire finger. Then make a print of your thumb...as seen in the picture above. Then let it completely dry. Then either use a marker or paint to draw lets ...notice that they all look the number #7 shape. Paste googly eyes on the face. And draw a smile. Draw curved lines for antennae and draw little dots at the end. You now have a cute grasshopper or cricket picture.
