The Bumblebee is a widely distributed social insect know for its ability to collect nectar from flowers and pollinate plants. Bumblebees are large yellow and black flying insects with a distinct buzz. There is variation in coloration among bumblebees and some species have bands of red, yellow and black. They have stocky bodies that are covered with many hairs to which pollen adheres. Like their relatives the honey bees, bumblebees feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young.
Children can make their own bumblebee by painting a paper plate yellow (or use a yellow plate to avoid the mess) and letting it dry. Then use black paint or a black marker to add the stripes. Finally add the eyes (wiggly eyes works great) and cut two wings from wax paper and tape it to the plate. Another idea is to make bumblebee from a paper lunch bag stuffed with newspaper and decorated with markers with two pipe cleaners or chenille stems for the antennae.
You want to make an adorable bumblebee figurine? Here is your chance. You start this project with an empty thread spool. Then you paint it yellow and let it dry. Then either paint black stripes on it or put electrical tape around the spool to make 2 black stripes. Paint a black smile on the bee's face...and put on 2 googly eyes....as seen in illustration #2 above. Cut a pipe cleaner in half ... each one can be an antennae. Cut 2 #3 shaped wings out of either wax paper, tracing paper, crafts foam, or just normal paper. Glue them on the back of the bumblebee. And there you have it... bumblebee figure.
