Salt is one of my favorite things. I love to cook, so I use salt all the time. Honestly though, when salt crafts first came up as a topic for crafts I was hesitant. I'm just a little bit superstitious and the thought of spilling salt all over the place gave me a touch of the willies. That however is because I was picturing things like dieing and gluing salt into pictures and stuff like that (which of course you can do). Then it occurred to me that there are some awesome craft materials where salt is incredibly important, that aren't really about just spilling the salt all over the place.
When I was young, I used to watch Mr. Wizard all the time and I love Bill Nye as well, so I'm shocked, in retrospect, that making salt crystals didn't come to mind immediately. You can form them into all kinds of cool shapes and beautiful colors with just a little work and know-how. They make a great kid's craft for those that have a bit of patience. Making salt dough and then creating sculptures out of them is great fun as well. So have bunches of fun with salt, just toss a bit over your shoulder while straightening up at the end, just in case
