A elastic band is a short length (sometimes long) of rubber and latex. It is elastic in nature and is formed in the shape of a circle which is commonly used to hold multiple objects together. The most elastic bands are manufactured out of natural rubber and comes in a variety of sizes.
Elastic bands are very popular among children's crafts. Children loves to use it to make masks for Halloween or for their Birthday hats to stay on their heads. Elastic is also popularly used to make bracelets and hair clips.
This is a great group classroom project as an adult is needed to assist with production of this bracelet. You will need small safety pins, stick sealing wax, 7" length round elastic, candle, a match, and clay. Groups should be small and there should be a helper. Teacher may hold stick of sealing wax over flame long enough to keep stick soft (not stringy). Pupils close safety pins and dip heads of pins, one at a time, in soft wax, being careful to keep away from flame. Twirl pin to make wax smooth and hold in air a moment to "set." Place closed pin in a lump of clay to dry. Do not touch pins while drying. When thoroughly hardened, string on heavy elastic thread through circle in small end of pin. Tie ends.
To make these adorable bracelets, you will need small pieces of macaroni, piece of elastic to fit wrist, scrap of felt, safety pins, food coloring, and needle and thread. Dip macaroni briefly in food coloring. Allow to dry overnight. String the macaroni on elastic band. A big safety pin at end of elastic will keep macaroni from slipping off. Sew ends of elastic together.
