MAKING WOODEN POODLE : Woodworking & Whittling Crafts for Kids & Teens

THIS CRAFT REQUIRES PARENTAL ASSISTANCE AND SUPERVISION!!!

Today we will show you how to cut the shape of a dog out of a block of wood. Then you will need to whittle the more refined shape of a poodle out of that shape. You will want to refer to whittling techniques and woodworking techniques before attempting this craft. Have fun!

Making wooden poodle

CRAFTS MATERIALS NEEDED:

Wood block 3" wide, 2" high and 1 1/2 " thick

Paper

Pencil

T racing paper

Knife with coarse and fine blades

Sandpaper, coarse and fine grades

Wood stain, varnish, shellac or paint.

How to Make Them:


(Parental Assistance and Supervision Required)

Hold wood block with the grain running up and down

1. Hold wood block with the grain running up and down, as in Figure 1.

Trace design to wood block with tracing paper

2. Draw poodle outline on paper the same size as the wood surface, as in Figure 2. Trace design to wood block with tracing paper.

Cut roughly around outline with hand or coping saw

3. Cut roughly around outline with hand or coping saw, as in Figure 3.

4. Allow bulk for ears. Make cut between legs, as in Figure 4.

5. With strong, coarse blade, make large cuts remoying fairly large chunks. As block comes closer to final shape, use finer blades, making smaller cuts and removing smaller chips. Figures 5 and 6 show front and back view of poodle.

6. Sandpaper smooth. Finish off with stain, varnish, shellac or several coats of paint, as in Figure 7.
