Napkin rings are a bit large for the cloth napkins they sell today. The pinch clothespin are more suited to these. This would make a great craft for Mom or Grandma on Mother's Day. You can make a different placeholder napkin holder for each person in your family. The recipe clip is very similar to the napkin holder craft, with one difference, a screw eye is added for hanging. Either way, both these crafts would make a great gift for someone you love.
pencil
garnet paper
pinch clothespin
toothpicks
lacquer or enamel
CLOTHESPIN NAPKIN HOLDER: Use the type of pinch clothespin illustrated, rather than the type with the coil in the middle, which tends to clog with paint. If there is any waxy substance on the wood surface, scrape this off well. Sand the wood with garnet paper. Pinch a toothpick between the jaws so that the pin can be painted all over without the fingers having to touch the freshly painted surfaces. Names, initials, pictures or floral designs, can be used for decoration.
CLOTHESPIN RECIPE CLIP: This is made in the same way as the napkin holder, with the addition of a small screw eye at the top of the lower wood piece. Have an adult help you, by using an awl to stab a starting hole for the screw eye (look at the picture above)
