1. Metal foil (copper, aluminum, brass (34 ga) bought by the pound)
2. Modeling tool (orange stick, spoon, or any tool which doesn't scratch)
3. Steel wool
4. A soft pad of newspaper or cloth
5. Pencil
6. Paper
7. Lacquer (for copper or brass)
1. Prepare your design on a piece of paper of the same size as your foil.
2. Place the metal foil on a pad of soft paper or cloth.
3. Lay your drawing on the foil and trace with a sharp pencil or stick so as to make an impression of your design on the metal.
4. Decide which parts of your design are to be raised and which parts are to be depressed. Lay the foil on a soft pad of newspaper or cloth; form and shape your design by pressing against the foil with a smooth tool until the desired relief is obtained. Turn the foil, first on one side and then on the other, and press from both sides.
5. Polish the foil with steel wool.
6. Lacquer the foil to keep it from tarnishing. If color is desired, enamel may be used instead of lacquer. Enameled surfaces should not be lacquered, and lacquered surfaces should not be enameled.
NOTE: Embossed foil designs may be matted and framed; they can be mounted on a plaque and they can be tacked to wooden jewelry boxes, etc. If foil designs are to be tacked down, small escutcheon nails may be placed about 1/4" apart along the edges to create a decorative border effect.
