This is a craft for September and October, when horse chestnuts ripen and fall. They are distinctly perishable, but once the children know how to make the bubble pipe, they can replace bowls as necessary. This craft requires parental assistance and supervision!
awl
knife or apple corer
horse chestnuts
drinking straws
dish, soap and glycerin (or bubbles)
This craft requires parental assistance and supervision! Gather the horse chestnuts and break off the prickly green husk. The nuts are a glossy dark brown, with a soft, light-colored eye. Cut the bowl through this soft spot. Use an awl to make a hole near the bottom of the bowl. Cut a straw about 3 or 4 inches long, and angle it at the end where it is to fit the bowl.
Make a bowl of soap solution. For durable, bouncy bubbles, add a few drops of glycerin to the water. Glycerin is obtainable in small bottles at drugstores, and is inexpensive. Or just use store-bought bubbles!
