To tell you the truth, I don't know if I can tell the difference between crocodiles and alligators, but either way when they are cartoons they look basically the same anyways. Because Alligators start with the alphabet letter 'A', a lot of teachers and parents take advantage of this and use it to teach preschoolers and toddlers about the letter 'A'. Good idea, I think.
Have you ever noticed that a sideways, capital letter 'A' looks like an opened Alligator mouth? Well, it does. You can take green construction paper, outline the capital letter 'A' on the paper for the child, and then have them cut it out. Then you can take googly eyes and white triangles for the teeth, and then you got a cute Cartoon Alligator Letter 'A'. This will teach the kids that the letter 'A' makes the Ahhhh sound.
Another idea is to make an Alligator magnetic paper clip for your refridgerator. All you have to do is paint or marker a clothespin green. Then take a googly eye and paste it to the side that clips. Then paint white teeth on that side as well. Stick a magnet on the back of the clothespin. You can then open it and stick a note in there and it will look like the alligator is eating your notes. Very cute.
I like making Alligator crafts that appear as if the creature is chomping on something since that is what they are known for. So another idea for a good Alligator craft is to get a stapler from the dollar store...paint the outside of it green. When the paint dries...paint a white circle for the eye....and when that dries...paint a black circle for the iris / pupil. If you want to, paint the metallic part, white for the teeth. You then have an alligator stapler. Really cool.
Another idea is to make a sock alligator puppet. Take an old green sock, cut a slit in the closed end....then cut out a large red oval. Sew the red felt to the inside of the cut slit that you made...this will be the part that opens and closes...the mouth. Then cut white triangles for the teeth. Either glue or sew them to the mouth of the sock.
Another idea is to make an egg carton crocodile by using an egg carton...cutting it in half and hinging it at the back instead of the side. Then paint the inside of the egg carton red....with the outside white...for the teeth. Paint the outside of it green. Now take another egg carton and paint it green. Now glue the head on the top of the body.
To make the above alligator mask, just print out our paper crocodile mask template.
Use the old fashioned, flat wooden clothespins. Ask an adult to cut one in half lengthwise. Glue a googly eye on the whole clothespin. Glue the 2 clothespins together. Add 4 short pipe cleaners on the half-clothespin for legs.
